PDP Candidate Consolidates Support Across Northern Nigeria

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar held a massive campaign rally in Kano, drawing hundreds of thousands of supporters from across the North in a show of force that his campaign says demonstrates his commanding support in the region. The rally, one of the largest political gatherings in Kano in recent memory, was attended by governors, traditional rulers, and prominent political figures from across Northern Nigeria.

Atiku used the occasion to announce what he described as the Northern Alliance for Progress, a coalition of political leaders from the North who have pledged to work together to deliver the region votes for the PDP presidential candidate in 2027. The alliance is seen as a direct challenge to President Tinubu incumbency advantage and APC dominance in certain parts of the North.

Northern Votes: The Key to Victory in 2027

Nigeria electoral arithmetic means that winning the presidency requires significant support in the North, which has the largest concentration of registered voters in the country. All three major candidates understand this and have been investing heavily in building structures and alliances across the northern states to ensure strong performance on election day.

Atiku base in the North has historically been strong, anchored in his Adamawa State origins and the network of relationships he has built over decades in Nigerian politics. However, his repeated failures to win the presidency despite this northern base have led some analysts to question whether familiarity has become a liability rather than an asset for his campaigns.

Security Concerns Dominate Northern Political Conversations

At the Kano rally, security concerns dominated the political conversation. Northern Nigeria has been severely affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, and farmer-herder conflicts that have displaced millions of people and disrupted economic activity across the region. Atiku pledged to make the security situation in the North a top priority if elected president.

He promised to hold a National Security Summit within his first 100 days in office, bringing together military chiefs, civil society, community leaders, and international partners to develop a comprehensive strategy for ending the insecurity that has plagued northern Nigeria for more than a decade. Security pledges resonated strongly with the crowd at the rally.

Peter Obi Also Making Inroads in the North

While Atiku was rallying in Kano, Peter Obi team was conducting town halls in Kaduna, Katsina, and Sokoto, continuing a concerted effort to build Labour Party support in traditionally PDP and APC strongholds. The Labour Party candidate surprised political analysts in 2023 by performing significantly better than expected in several northern states.

In 2027, Obi camp is determined to consolidate and expand on that northern foothold, recognizing that any candidate who can break through in the North while maintaining strong support in the South has the formula for a potential presidential win. The three-way competition for northern votes is shaping up to be one of the most fascinating subplots of the 2027 election story.
