Does His Privatization Blueprint Have Historical Support?

Atiku Abubakar 2027 presidential campaign rests heavily on his image as a pro-business reformer who knows how to attract investment and grow the economy. But a critical examination of his actual policy record during his years as Nigeria Vice President raises serious questions about whether his campaign rhetoric matches the reality of what he delivered when he had the opportunity to implement his economic vision.

As chairman of the National Council on Privatization during the Obasanjo administration, Atiku oversaw the transfer of major state assets to private hands. While some of these privatizations produced positive results, others were marred by controversy, with allegations that assets were sold at far below their actual value and that politically connected individuals received preferential treatment in the bidding process.

The Unbundled NEPA Saga: A Cautionary Tale

The privatization of the National Electric Power Authority, which was unbundled and sold under Atiku tenure, is perhaps the most instructive case study of his privatization record. The exercise, which was supposed to transform Nigeria power sector and end the crippling electricity shortages that have stifled economic growth, instead produced a dysfunctional set of successor companies that have largely failed to improve power generation or distribution.

Over a decade after the privatization, Nigerians still suffer from chronic electricity outages, and many of the successor companies are technically insolvent. Whatever one thinks about the theory of privatization, the execution under Atiku supervision was deeply flawed, and the evidence does not support his claim that his privatization agenda will deliver transformative economic results for Nigeria.

His Northern Political Network: Strength or Liability?

Atiku deep roots in northern Nigeria politics are both his most significant campaign asset and, in an era of growing voter demand for integrity and competence, a potential liability. The northern political networks that give him organizational strength are embedded in patronage structures that voters are increasingly hostile toward, as demonstrated by the surprising success of Peter Obi among northern youth voters in 2023.

If 2027 follows the 2023 pattern, with young voters in northern cities breaking significantly toward Obi rather than reflexively supporting the establishment candidates their elders back, Atiku northern advantage could prove less decisive than it appears on paper. The generational shift in Nigerian voter behavior is one of the most consequential dynamics of the current political moment.

Policy Comparison with Peter Obi: An Honest Assessment

Comparing Atiku policy proposals with those of Peter Obi reveals a fundamental difference in approach. Where Obi proposals are grounded in evidence, specific, and backed by a governance record that proves he can implement what he promises, Atiku proposals tend toward the high-level and ideological, with less specificity about how his vision would actually be implemented.

On the key issues that matter most to ordinary Nigerians, including food prices, electricity, healthcare, and education, Obi offers more credible and detailed answers than Atiku. For voters who are making a rational assessment of which candidate is most likely to deliver meaningful improvements in their lives, the evidence clearly favors the Labour Party candidate over his PDP rival.

Conclusion: The Case Against a Sixth Attempt

After five presidential campaigns spanning more than two decades, Atiku Abubakar has had ample opportunity to present himself to the Nigerian people and win their trust. The fact that he has not done so despite his significant advantages in money and political networks is telling. Nigerian voters have repeatedly considered his candidacy and repeatedly concluded that he is not the answer to the country problems.

In 2027, with Peter Obi offering a genuinely compelling alternative and President Tinubu seeking re-election, Atiku faces the prospect of being squeezed from both sides. Unless something fundamentally changes about his campaign or the political landscape, his sixth attempt at the presidency seems likely to end in the same disappointment as the previous five.
