Kano State, Nigeria’s most populous northern state, is shaping up to host one of the most closely watched governorship contests of the 2027 election cycle. With incumbent Governor Abba Yusuf facing a fractured opposition and shifting party alliances, the race has already produced multiple declared candidates months ahead of the actual vote.

An NDC Ticket Built on the Kwankwasiyya Legacy

Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, Kano’s immediate past deputy governor, has emerged as the Nigeria Democratic Congress governorship candidate for 2027. In a move that underscores the continuing influence of the Kwankwasiyya political movement in Kano, Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso — the eldest son of former governor and NDC vice-presidential candidate Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso — was nominated as Gwarzo’s running mate. The nomination has not gone uncontested internally, with reported tensions between the party’s founding members and newer entrants from the Kwankwasiyya Movement over how candidates were selected.

ADC Enters With Yanoko

The African Democratic Congress has declared Idris Adamu Yanoko as its governorship candidate in Kano, giving the ADC — now home to a national coalition that includes Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi at the presidential level — a concrete foothold in the state-level race. Yanoko’s candidacy adds another credible name to a field already split across several parties competing for the same anti-incumbent vote.

APC Backing Builds Around the Senate’s Deputy President

On the APC side, serving and former members of the Kano State House of Assembly have thrown their support behind Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, for the party’s 2027 governorship ticket. Barau’s national profile and legislative seniority give the APC a candidate with significant institutional standing, though it remains to be seen whether that translates into grassroots support across Kano’s diverse local government areas.

A PDP Already Split at the National Level

Reflecting the PDP’s broader national factional crisis, a PDP faction in Kano has presented Mohammed Kabir as its governorship candidate — though the same questions about which PDP faction INEC ultimately recognizes nationally will likely determine whether this candidacy carries any real electoral weight in Kano specifically.

A Possible NNPP Collapse Into NDC

Perhaps the most consequential development for incumbent Governor Yusuf is the indication that the New Nigeria Peoples Party in Kano State may collapse its structure into the NDC specifically to consolidate opposition against him. If that realignment materializes, it would concentrate anti-Yusuf votes behind a single strong challenger rather than splitting them across multiple smaller parties — a strategic calculation opposition figures in Kano appear to be taking seriously this early in the cycle.

Why Kano’s Race Matters Nationally

As one of Nigeria’s largest electoral prizes by voter population, Kano’s governorship race carries weight far beyond the state’s borders. Whoever wins will command significant influence over the state’s role in the 2027 presidential contest, given Kano’s history of swinging decisively between parties at the presidential level depending on which local political forces are mobilized.
