Three Presidential Debates Planned Before Election Day

The Nigerian Elections Debate Group has announced a comprehensive debate schedule for the 2027 presidential election, with three major televised debates planned before election day. The announcement has been broadly welcomed by civil society and the media as a positive development for democratic accountability in Nigeria, giving voters the opportunity to directly compare the candidates on policy substance and temperament.

The debates will be organized around three broad themes: economy and governance, security and foreign policy, and social development including education and healthcare. Each debate will feature the three leading candidates, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, and President Bola Tinubu of the APC, subject to confirmation from all campaigns.

Obi Campaign Enthusiastically Accepts Invitation

The Labour Party campaign was quickest to accept the debate invitation, with Peter Obi personally confirming his participation. His enthusiastic acceptance is consistent with his reputation for being comfortable discussing policy details and economic data, areas in which his supporters believe he has a significant advantage over his rivals. Obi debate performances in 2023 were widely praised for their depth and specificity.

Campaign sources say Obi and his team have already begun debate preparation, assembling a team of policy experts, economists, and communications specialists to help the candidate sharpen his arguments and practice his delivery. His team is particularly focused on the economy debate, which they believe could be the most consequential exchange of the entire campaign.

APC and PDP Yet to Confirm Participation

While the Labour Party confirmed quickly, both the APC and PDP had not yet formally confirmed their candidates participation as of publication time. Sources close to the Tinubu campaign suggested the president was inclined to participate but had concerns about the format and moderators. PDP sources said Atiku would likely accept but was reviewing the terms.

Civil society organizations have warned that any candidate who refuses to participate in presidential debates will face severe reputational consequences with Nigerian voters, particularly educated urban youth who demand policy accountability from their elected officials. The pressure to participate is likely to prove decisive for all three candidates.

Debates Could Be Pivotal in a Three-Way Race

With three significant candidates in the race, the presidential debates take on added importance in 2027. In a multi-candidate field, a strong debate performance can shift momentum dramatically, while a stumble or awkward moment can be magnified by social media and have lasting effects on a campaign. All three candidates have much to gain or lose on the debate stage.

Analysts point out that in 2023, the debates were one of the few occasions where candidates were forced to engage directly with difficult policy questions without the safety net of prepared speeches and friendly crowds. For voters still making up their minds, the debates will likely be among the most influential events of the entire 2027 election campaign.
